How to pack for a business trip without the last-minute scramble

A business trip is often squeezed between other commitments. A short list and a travel kit kept ready can help you pack quickly without leaving your charger or meeting documents at the office.

Keep a dedicated travel kit

If you travel regularly, keep a wash bag with travel-size essentials and a spare charging cable with your luggage. Replace what you used after each trip and check the condition of its contents. For flights, adjust your wash bag to the security rules and your airline’s conditions.

Choose clothes that work together

For two or three days, a consistent colour palette makes outfits easier to plan. Pack for each day of meetings, add a versatile spare piece and bring shoes that suit the schedule. Wear your bulkiest comfortable items in transit if it helps.

Protect clothes that crease

Fold shirts, blouses and jackets carefully and place them above heavier items. Keep shoes and sportswear separate. Hang clothes that need to look smart soon after arrival. Follow the fabric care label before using steam.

Keep essentials close

Laptop, charger, identification, payment cards and medicines should be easy to find on the journey. If you fly, check the size and number of bags allowed by your ticket. A small separate bag can be useful, provided it is included in your allowance.

Your departure checklist

  • Travel documents, ticket and meeting address
  • Laptop, charger and a suitable destination adapter
  • Planned outfits, shoes and wash bag
  • Essentials in the bag that stays with you
  • Weight and dimensions checked against the transport rules

Keep the list on your phone and refine it after each trip. Next time, you only need to decide what is different about that particular journey.
