What suitcase size do you need? A guide to litres

The length of a trip does not decide suitcase size on its own. Season, access to laundry, transport and what you need to carry all matter. Capacity in litres is a useful guide, but outer dimensions and empty weight are just as important.

What does capacity tell you?

Two cases with similar outer dimensions may offer different space inside. Compare the stated volume and the layout of their compartments. A larger case is not always more useful if you pack lightly or need to lift it often.

The ALTAIR Original product pages list 34 litres for Cabin, 55 litres for Medium and 90 litres for Large. These figures help compare the models; they do not replace trying one with the things you normally pack.

Cabin size: travel with the essentials

A short break or business trip may fit into a cabin case, particularly if you choose outfits that work together. Before booking or travelling, check the dimensions, weight and number of pieces included in your fare. ‘Cabin size’ is never a universal guarantee that a bag will be accepted on board.

Medium: room to manoeuvre

A medium case is useful for a longer stay, several kinds of outfits or some spare space for the journey home. Think about its weight once packed and how you will move it between stations, local transport and your accommodation.

Large: bulky belongings

Winter clothes, specialist equipment or a shared family load may justify a large case. Do not rely on capacity alone: check your carrier’s weight and dimension limits and weigh the bag before leaving. It may close easily yet be too heavy to handle comfortably.

Three questions to help you decide

  1. What does the journey involve? Flying, trains, driving and walking put different demands on luggage.
  2. What genuinely needs to come? Make a real packing list before choosing a volume.
  3. What can I carry comfortably? Total weight matters as much as capacity.

If you are between two sizes, lay out your belongings and compare them with each model’s dimensions and capacity. You are more likely to choose a case that fits the trip without becoming a burden.
